Advert Analysis

The first magazine advert that I have decided to look at is of Gwen Stefani. There is a lot of typical features in this advert such as the name of the Solo artist, as well as the name of the album (love.Angel.Music.Baby) and the official website where you can buy or download the album. You can also tell which shop you can buy it from.
By the colours shown throughout the advert, the category for this type of music i feel would involve Pop music with an edge.
The images used in this advert are of the solo artist as well as the album front cover. The image is of Gwen Stefani on a throne looking chair with a crown. This could show that the album will have a glamorous feel and that she is the 'Queen of pop'.
The text that has been used is the same throughout the advert and is also the same colour. The font of the text has a decorative pattern which in victorian times, would be expensive and luxurious. The colour also resembles gold which goes well with the image of Gwen Stefani as she looks like a queen and royal people tend to be rich and have gold. The text and the image have complimented each other well as the colours match.
Gwen Stefani represents
herself in this advert as she is well known for her bleach blonde hair and on this advert it has been shown to great extent. The advert doesn't really say much about the music, only which known songs are in the album however just by looking at the advert, you can get a feel for the type of music, with it being light coloured you think of pop.
What I have learnt by looking at this advert is that there is no need to put on a lot of words as people will probably just glance at the advert and take a small notice of when it is out. The better the image, the better the advert.

My second magazine advert is from the band, the Foo Fighters. This magazine advert is completely different from the advert involving Gwen Stefani. Firstly, there is a logo in the centre of the advert which resembles the band whereas in the other magazine advert, there is no logo, only the artist.
On this magazine advert however there is no band or artist on the ad at all. If I had to categorise this advert, I would say that has a slight edge and would say that the type of genre for this type of music would be either Indie or Rock.
The colours used on this advert show that the band is not targeted at a specific gender, however the style of written is quite modern. I therefore feel that the ideal people that would be listening to this type of band would be a mixtures of males and females and I think that the majority of them would be teens and young adults. I couldn't imagine a pensioner listening to them although I can't imagine them
liking the magazine advert though either. The same type of text has been used throughout this advert and it also involves the release date(November 2nd), the band's name(Foo Fighters) and also what the album is called(Foo Fighters Greatest Hits). Since the background seems quite basic and there is no image of the band itself, it is clear to say that the band is well known to not have an image and to be called 'Greatest Hits' signifies that they have had a few previous albums.

Shot Count

I watched this video and i attempeted in counting all of the shots. Overall, I got 228 shots however at some parts the speed of the shots quickened which made this even more challenging.
The main shots used in this video are High and Low angles, as well as medium and close up shots. The close up and medium shots were throughout the video however the fluidity was shown by the angles which gave a great variation and made the video look more professional.
They didn't really use any creative techniques however the use of the crane and tracks from scene to scene made the editing seem almost invisible. To me I feel that these are quite creative because if they weren't placed in were they are now then the flow of the video would be disrupted.
The genre I feel is best suited for this type of music is pop/dance/techno. This is visible by the clothing that is worn and also by the way they dance at the beginning( eg. If it was hard rock or heavy metal they would be head banging). The narrative has been applied in this video as LMFAO are the only normal people left on their planet as everyone has been shown the 'shuffle' and the only way to fit in is to dance along. The audience for this type of video is for anyone who likes dance, pop or techno music as well as teenagers as the costumes are more likely to be associated with them. I feel that there is no specific thing the video is trying to represent however I think that the video is supposed to make people feel good and tell them to relax as the line 'hating is bad' is repeated on various occasions.

In this music video from the Script there have been 172 cuts which means there is a lot of camera activity and considering this is a medium pace the number of shots is very high. The reason for this i think is because the song is very emotional and this is shown through the fast paced editing.
The majority of the shots are generally close up of the actors and performers faces to show their emotions, this is seen in the mix of band performers and a narrative story performance by the actors. A constant editing technique that has been used is overlaying two pieces of footage to create meaning, this was very useful when we saw the face of the actor and then footage of a location on top which can suggest the persons thoughts and feelings.

The Script follows the usual alternative rock genre where the music videos show the band performing and generally many meat shot of the main singer are used. This music video also has a narrative running parallel to the performance to enhance the meaning of the song. I think the video is mostly aimed women because the male singer is shown as the voyegerist figure and the narrative was made to represent a range of feelings that girl can experience making them relate to the video.

This music video by Vampire Weekend is in a similar genre although the full video is produced in a single continuos shot which changed as the story goes on but not cuts to another angle or action. This is a good example of great choreography and confident performance.

Lip Sync-Barbie Girl

to create our video we downloaded the song into Itunes and went into the college studio to create our performance parody. We got the lyrics off the internet and then used them in our performance so we didn't get any words mixed up. We recorded the video while the music played throughout.
Once we had our video we edited it all in final cut.We used markers which helped us to sync the sound up properly since we added our song back into the video, but only louder. We then used the razor tool to cut sections which gave variety of the video.

Julian Opie self portrait

Julian Opie is known for his Pop art and in pacific, the front cover of 'The Best Of Blur' album. Julian Opie has inspired thousands of people in this genre of art and I have decided to try and create my own version of me.To create my Julian Opie inspired me i found an image of myself and put it in photoshop.

I then went around each part of my face using the polygonal Lasso tool until my face was selected.

I then used
the eyedropper
tool to get the colour of my skin correct, so that the portrait of me in pop art looks quite accurate.

After i coloured these areas in with the paint bucket tool. I did this with all of the body parts (hair, top, facial features etc) and eventually, i was left with the above picture.

Music Video Analysis

At the beginning of this video, the director shows different people in different situations; as the beat continues the camera jumps to another person in another situation. The narrative side is shown throughout the video as everybody wants to get away from the stress of everything. This leads to Natasha Bedingfield being their saviour at the end and giving them the space to relax and be themselves. By taking them away from everything stressful, this is how the video relates to the song as well as showing sunshine throughout which relates to the chorus. Also when she sings in the video its almost as if she is talking to the people in the video ( Her boss is yelling at her and she is singing that it isn't going to 'break her').

This video starts off showing fast camera actions as it jumps from scene to scene. Later the band is shown in darkness which makes the audience concentrate more on the beats and this can be seen through the instruments playing. Throughout the music video, The All American Rejects are performing with their instruments and everyone else is showing their secrets on a piece of card. A lot of people may relate to this and feel comforted to know that everyone keeps secrets. Because there is so many to read, people will watch it again and again until they have read them all. The music relates to the song as the video shows the chorus literally( 'i'll give you my dirty little secret' and they are all being read by the viewers).

At the very beginning of this video, Ok Go move to the beat which lets the viewers see the beats. The performance throughout is based on the beats and the usage of props has been used effectively and make the overall performance enjoyable and a pleasure to watch. Although the video may be fun to watch, the video uses disjuncture throughout as the song is called here it goes again and the video is of them dancing on treadmills.

As the music video begins, when the beat changes, so does the camera angle. Beats are shown slightly throughout however some people may not acknowledge this as this is slightly hidden and not as visible to see as the Ok Go video. In this video two people communicate and dance with each other while waiting for an ambulance to arrive as they have both just been in a car crash. The camera angles have been moved to make a very effective look that makes the audience want to watch it again. Adel ( the singer) is portrayed as a witness to the accident as she is in her car in a traffic jam because of the accident. The video shows relevance to the song chasing pavements as the couple are on the pavement and when they get to know each other they get separated by the doctors.

The camera shots change in the beginning as the fastness of the beats quickens. This shows the beats throughout the video and is used effectively as it can easily be picked up on by the audience.
The following 3 music videos we feel show a unique quality as both music videos have been well thought out and use great editing techniques.
