Initial ideas

Our initial ideas has been presented in a mind map which shows all of our thoughts of what we would like to do in the music video.Together we will discuss our ideas and agree on which ones to put into action.

I am a student at Hartlepool Sixth Form College studying Media Studies and for my major project I have to produce a music video for a song of my choice. Being a fan of Maximo Park I would like to use their song 'Apply Some Pressure' for my college project. The song would be used throughout my college project and would be used for educational purposes only. Also a digipak and advert will be produced as part of the project. I can send a copy of the final outcome if you wish.
Your sincerely,
Charlotte Barker

Nine frame analysis

The song that I have analysed is called Ruby by 'The Kaiser Chiefs'. I chose to analyse this band as they are an indie band which will help us signify what we will need to do in our music video.
In the first screen shot a medium shot is shown of the band members. The camera is also on an angle which creates the illusion that we are looking up at them and that they are giants. This has been done on purpose because in the next shot you can see that everything is smaller than them.
The camera is still looking up at them but now however, there is some buildings being created around them. This gives the feeling that we are the same height as the small figures and we are looking up at them.In this shot there is no significance yet to the lyrics and the visuals.
The following shot shows a medium shot that is slightly angled upwards, in which we are slightly taller however not level with them still. In this shot all of the band members are playing an instrument and have been throughout so far. This shows that indie bands seem to perform in their music videos rather than do a narration for them.
After this shot the is a close up of the singer's head. This shot has been slightly linked to the song. The lyrics to this part are 'the thoughts in my head', this is when the clip is shown and the helicopter hovers around his head. In the clip before when the camera was on a slight angle, this may have been why, to make the audience feel like they were in the helicopter.
In this next shot there is a close up of an instrument. This shows that indie bands definitely use a camera as a stage and perform to their fans, even if no one is there. This is useful to know for when filming our music video.
In the sixth screen shot although there is a close up of a drum, you can tell how well this music video has been thought out. They have tried to use every part of the instruments in their video such as a road going through the drum which shows how much detail they have went into.
After this shot there is another medium shot of the band and also what surrounds them. The buildings are getting higher and they are taking up more space throughout the video, however there is no link to the video and the lyrics as the lyrics are talking about a girl. The shot is also an over the shoulder shot which makes the audience still feel as if the are in the helicopter as the camera is still on an angle.
The next shot shows a part of an instrument that has fallen off and how it has disturbed the new town. During this shot there is also no relevance what so ever to the video still and the lyrics.
The final shot shows slight relevance to the shot as the lyric says 'that you don't really see you and me' and in the shot it is now hard to find the band members. This shot shows the progression of the town, how it has transformed and is now looking like a city. In this shot you are level with the singer and because he knelt down just before this shot it indicates that the singer wants to tell the audience something, almost as if he wants to make it seem more personal.
Throughout this full video I feel that the lyrics didn't fit the video well as the singer is talking about a girl and yet the video shows a town being built around them. There is no voyeuristic treatment to the male or female body in this video however in certain parts of the video there is slight notion of looking through buildings to see the singer. There was also no references to any films on the other hand they did perform like what an indie band would do on their music video. As a while however I feel that the lyrics and visuals are contradicting one another.

Digipak

The digipak i have decided to look at is the album of Franz Ferdinand. I have chosen this digipak in particular because this is the type of music we intend to use for our music video.
The images used in this digipak consist of the band in general and also the singer's hand on the back cover. The full back, front and the spine of the cover is all in black and white apart from the band's name. This adds a dramatic feel to the album cover and because the colours are black, white and orange, they trigger a wide audience since the colours are all neutral. The font for all of the writing is white which makes it much easier to see and is also in capitals. Capitalisation is often used to get someone's attention so having the writing positioned near the band members has grabbed the attention of the audience as people tend to look at images first rather than words. The text and images give a slight masculine feel to the album cover as the writing looks edgy as well as the tone of the images which also give them an edgy feel. The image on the back also has a connection to the front image as it has the singer's hand on the back cover.
By looking at this album cover I can automatically tell that this band do not sing pop or rap. This band seems to like stuff that is quite quirky or they wouldn't have designed an album cover like this so i therefore suggest that the type of music that they create is slightly indie/rock. In this album there is an extra disc inside which is exclusive to the album. In the top left corner there is a sticker/sign that says 'Limited Edition, 2 disc special'.
The album cover does not consist of the album being a first album or there last, so it looks like it's a mainstream album from the band.

Personal Audit

Digital Technology

What equipment/software packages did you use to produce your production?

Skills acquired- I used softwares such as Final cut, I movie, Live Type and Photoshop.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

The titles were created in Live type. The changing of the colour scheme was final cut and My Julian Opie portrait was created in Photoshop.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?- I will use the same techniques but to a higher standard.

Post production

What software did you use to create your production?Discuss specific features of the software.

Skills acquired- I used the TV studio, hand held cameras, final cut, and Live type to create our opening sequence.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

The TV studio helped us create an eerie looking background and the hand held cameras we used gave us a wider variety of places to shoot and we could create effects by using the cameras in a certain way.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?- I could use the same techniques but to a higher standard, which will gain more knowledge and understanding of the cameras.

Research and planning

  • what tasks did you complete when preparing to film your sequence?

How did your planning help the smooth progression of your film?

Skills acquired- I analysed opening sequences from films, the BBFC. I also created a storyboard, mind map and a pitch.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

I filmed before the deadline and completed all of my work on time.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?- I will have further analyse my chosen area as more products will need to be made. I will also re-shoot my music video a few times if I have to.

Creativity

· Were our ideas for your portfolio imaginative and unique or did you adhere to conventions?

Skills acquired-I used conventions and appropriate props.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

The props were similar to the ones in films however the storylines were different.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?- I will try and challenge conventions and try and make the editing much more professional which may be slightly more complicated.

Using conventions of real media texts

· Which texts did you analyse?

· Did you take any inspiration from the conventions found from your research?

Skills acquired- I analysed, L.A Confidential, Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Master, Orphan and The Grudge.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

I got some inspiration from all of the films and it gave me more of an understanding of what to put in my opening sequence.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?- I will do further analysis of media texts and portray similar similarities.
